Ugh, I so agree. I'm doing a project right nwo for my SEO company on building Twitter followers. I'm trying all the methods and let me tell you from experience, those quick-build techniques are awful! You get thousands of followers but the quality sucks. I remember being at a Social Media conference and hearing one of the speakers say "yea, you get 3 million followers and then one day you realize 90 percent of them are porn bots. Porn bots don't usually buy website services".

Ah, the truth comes out. I think the best way to judge Twitter followers is to see the follower/follow-ee ration. If you're only following 10 people but have 10,000 followers you clearly have a group of people who are supporting you and NOT just looking for follow backs.

That's just my opinion though.

The same concept goes for incoming links (quality vs. quantity) just did a blog on it Great points. From an SEO perspective, link-building is such a great way to increase traffic. Not only does it increase traffic by referring visitors but it also makes you show up higher on Google listings. I just wrote a blog about it that emphasizes a lot of the points you just made, thought it might tickle your fancy (http://www.snageveryone.com/apps/blog/show/2348039-the-truth-behind-linking).

And no, that's not a link for spam purposes, thought you might actually enjoy the blog.

You're right. It's really a shame because the real experts often get buried by the scam artists and thus get passed over. I guess that really applies to a lot of the businesses today that offer such services. Even in my field, we encounter a few potential clients thare are sketchy about working with web development firms because they've been burned in the past by people that would offer generic, linear website packages and pass themselves off as 'SEO experts'.

A prime example for us was a guy that had an existing website and was paying a guy so much a month for SEO. Immediately you'd assume things like unique page titles, content keyword optimization, etc. This guy was doing nothing of the sort. No unique titles, horrible META tags--which were often times missing altogether--and his website placed terrible in search engines. And yet this guy continued to pay x amount per month for 'SEO'. Needless to say, he was one of the most paranoid of the bunch. Luckily for him, we set him sailing in the right direction and got his website placement on track.

There's a big fat line between spamming and web-savvy marketing. These 'social media experts' have crossed it and are no different from the 'SEO Experts' who use spam bots and link baiting, and 'Email Marketing Experts' who buy thousands of email accounts from harvesters...

People will learn, but not till a few people make a lot of money for doing very little.

I agree with you completely. I think your audience should be the one deciding whether or not you are of "guru" status. If you're reaching a large amount of people with your product and the reviews are top notch, then I'd say you're almost there. But in my eyes, you need some time and work under your belt. A guru should be someone who has a name that rings bells to anyone in the same industry or an industry that benefits greatly from what they offer. Self-proclaimed professionals drive me crazy. It's almost like lying about a college degree or something.

And I'm totally down for a link exchange.

Most of the time, they are not experts. You are not an expert until you have influenced someone and then possibly you might be an expert in that person's eyes. I will be covering this in a blog. Micah Baldwin talked about this at WordCamp Chicago and I have Twitter Tipped this on my own twitter for months.

BTW... link exchange with me?

Yeah. If you use Twitter often, it gets really over-the-top. There's TONS of people on there that think their idea is original. I was actually amazed at how many people there are on there that claim to be internet marketing gurus. I understand it though. It's easy for anyone to get into. It requires almost no skill.

Thats so true. There is no such thing as getting rich with little no work involved. (Not unless you win the lottery or some shit.) Good read though.
